APPENDIX I
Map 5 illustrates the spatial distribution of the residences of six groups of kin, based on the 1759 household census. Additional information about these selected kin groups and details of the composition of the individual households are provided here.
The six groups are further subdivided into sets; here a "set" of kin is defined as the parents, the children, the siblings, and the children of those siblings, of both husband and wife (or widower or widow) who are heads of the initial household. The patterns shown in Map 4 are centered on the principal households, and each principal household typically has two sets of kin, one for the male head and one for the female head (although the simple principal household of Group Three has but one head and thus one set of kin, while the complex principal household of Group Two has four heads of household and thus four sets). Other than providing a starting point for the analysis, the principal household designation has no particular significance among the several households in each set.
The six groups were chosen from the many that could have been presented for two reasons. First, these surnames appear often in the text (Liendo, Blanco, Tovar, Ponte, Mijares); and second, most of the heads of household in these groups were mature but not aged adults in 1759. By selecting groups of siblings who were at midrange in the life cycle in 1759, who were no longer children but not yet grandparents, a maximum distribution of siblings in distinct households was expected. Younger sets of siblings would find many of them still at home with their parents, and sets of older siblings would find many of them already dead in 1759. If an individual died before the 1759 census but was survived by a widow or widower (with or without children) who was alive in 1759, that individual's household is included here. The thirty-two distinct households that make up the residences of the six sets of kin (some
households belonged to more than one set) are but a portion of the eighty-five elite households analyzed in chapter 7.
Birth, death, and marriage dates are given when they are known; children are designated by age when known or by the designation párvulo taken from the census. (In canonical terms párvulos had not reached age of reason, which is to say they were not yet ready to be admitted to communion and confession. Ideally this occurred at age seven, but priests probably judged individuals on a case basis.) The term children refers to the offspring of the household head or heads. Occasionally these "children" were adults in 1759.
In certain complex households the census taker observed what were described as distinct families ("otra familia en esta casa "). This distinction has been noted here.

On the basis of its composition, reinforced by the census takers' sense that there was but one large family here, this is the only three-generation stem household in Caracas in 1759. This household is fully described in Group Six, household 6.3

Group Two notes: The center or principal source of this kindred in 1759 was the elderly couple who were heads of household 2.4. Lorenzo Ponte Villegas and Josefa Mijares Tovar were grandparents to Maria Ponte Mijares, the wife of Martin Tovar, in household
2.2, and they were the parents of the Ponte Mijares siblings in households 2.2 and 2.4. Without doubt Josefa Mijares was the matriarch of all those named Mijares in this group. The spouses who were first cousins (heads of households 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, and 2.6) were related to each other through her (as mother: the Ponte Mijares; and as aunt: the Pacheco Mijares, the Mijares Ascanio, and the Mijares Tovar). She was the aunt of both Francisco Nicolás Mijares Tovar, the third Marqués de Mijares, and Juan Jacinto Pacheco Mijares, the second Conde de San Javier. By 1760, she was, at age 69, the oldest living blood relative of all these people.
