1. The Bracero program—the word root means "arm" in Spanish—continued in force until the end of 1964, when political pressures finally led the federal government to abolish this "emergency" measure.

2. Two years later the California State Supreme Court overturned the order, citing the collusive relationship between the employers and the Teamsters and the latter's lack of support among farmworkers at the time the contracts were signed.

3. Early in 1982 the pact was extended for another five-year period.
