Epilogue

Epilogue

Any attempt to summarize or highlight the results of the excavation project at Nemea must include, among movable objects, the Classical marble relief (SS 8; see p. 30) and the bronze hydria (BR 379; see pp. 41-42). These pieces, from an art historical point of view, give much to our understanding of their periods. The same can be said on the architectural side for the fragments of the Early Temple of Zeus (case 19; see pp. 57-60) and for the Stadium entrance tunnel (pp. 184-91). The latter adds additional insights thanks to the graffiti on its walls.

More important, the coins, broken bits and pieces of pottery, architecture, inscriptions, figurines, and the like have sharpened our picture of Nemea considerably as we have come to understand, for example, that this sacrosanct Panhellenic center suffered a violent destruction late in the 5th century B.C. and that the Nemean Games were repeatedly moved back and forth between Argos and Nemea. Indeed, we now know that those games, which endured for more than a millennium as an institution, actually took place at Nemea for less than a quarter of that time. In other words, Nemea shows us that peace in the ancient world was an elusive goal. The Panhellenic impulse did meet with considerable success, but it also encountered problems, and some of these have been more dearly defined at Nemea. Solutions—whether successful or not—to those problems in ancient Greece provide lessons in international relations for our so-

ciety. It would be a happy result of the Nemea project if we have made those lessons more widely known.

Perhaps the nicest lesson of the project, however, has been that there are so many people curious about our common heritage and willing to support archaeological research in an effort to satisfy that curiosity. Since 1973 the Nemea project has been funded largely (about 90 percent) by the gifts of private citizens and foundations. Those who supported the excavations during the first decade of the project have been acknowledged by a marble plaque in the museum (see p. 17). Those who supported the reconstruction of the Temple of Zeus during that same period were acknowledged in the catalogue for the exhibition at the Benaki Museum in Athens in April 1983. It seems appropriate to conclude this book by acknowledging those who since 1983 have made it possible for our research to continue and for this book to be published. We acknowledge their support with sincere gratitude and, in many cases, deep affection.
