[15] An inquiry closely related to semiotic study of codes of interpretation is the Rezeptionsästhetik first introduced by Jauss. According to Jauss, the analysis of how a work conveyed meaning to any particular audience depends on the reference system of expectations of that audience. While I would disagree with Jauss as to the degree to which the "horizon of expectations" of Cicero's audience can be objectively formulated, nevertheless my own study takes for granted the need to analyze the audience's reception of Cicero's speeches within the historical and literary moment in which they occurred. See Jauss's "Literary History as a Challenge to Literary Theory."
