APPENDIX B—
REAL ESTATE HOLDINGS OF SAMPLE

In Section ii of Chapter 5, the real estate holdings of the sample were discussed. Information on these was acquired from three main sources: the listing of unpaid rents in inventories which were not backed by the listing of leasehold property, memoranda in the Common Serjeants' Books and information from the wills of the sample. Altogether, 181 wills have been found (48 per cent of the whole sample and 80 per cent of those who were testate) and it seems probable that, using all three sources, not many men with real estate will have been missed, since it is a reasonable assumption that most men who possessed real estate would have made a will. Only a minority of references contain valuations or a statement of the rental of property, and the valuations in the list below are therefore mainly guesstimates. Where property has been valued, this has been used as a guide to the value of what seems a similar sort of property which has not been valued. Rentals have been multiplied by 20 to provide valuations.

The properties have been graded for value on a five point scale for value as follows: 1 = less than £300; 2 = £300–£999; 3 = £1000–£1999; 4 = £2000–£5000; 5 = over £5000.

They have also been classified by type as follows: A = London property; B = suburban or villa property; C = provincial urban property; D = one or two farms; E = larger country estate.
