adelantat : An elected administrator of a Muslim community involved in the fiscal and judicial affairs of the community as a whole; each community had from two to four such officials.

alfondeguer : The Christian lessee of the fonduk (see below) of a Muslim community.

aljama : The corporate municipal body of the Muslims; it was roughly comparable to the Christian universitas .

almugaver : A foreign Muslim raider, usually from the sultanate of Granada.

amin^[*] : The chief financial official of the Muslim community and the most prominent intermediary between it and the Christian authorities.

^c asabiyah^[*] : Agnatic solidarity among the members of a Muslim lineage group.

çalmedina : A Muslim official with police and executive functions within the community.

censal : A long-term loan liquidated by the debtor through the payment of annual pensions, with interest, to the creditor.

Converso : A convert from Judaism to Christianity.

dar^[*]al-Islam^[*] : Islamic lands where Islamic law is in force.

dhimmah : A contract according protection to Christians and Jews living under Islamic rule.

dhimmi^[*] : A beneficiary of the dhimmah .

faqih^[*] : A Muslim jurist, often acting as a schoolteacher and preacher in the mosque among the Muslims of Valencia.

fonduk : An inn and goods depository, often with a tavern, intended for visiting Muslims and Jews.

Furs : The law code of the kingdom of Valencia.

morería : The Muslim quarter of a city or town.

Morisco : A convert from Islam to Christianity.

Mudejar : A Muslim living under Spanish Christian rule.

qadi^[*] : A Muslim judge; the most important official in the aljama.

Shariah : Islamic law, based on the Qur'an and the Sunnah .

Sunnah : The deeds and statements of the Prophet Muhammad that acquired normative force in Islam.

ummah : The international Islamic community.
